Employment law compliance for vets

Dr. Lisa Geraghty, MVB, MSc, BA (Hons.) Law, A.M. is a certified civil and commercial mediator. Her career in mediation developed following some years working in both the private and public sectors in Ireland. Her interesting and varied professional life has promoted an array of skills which culminates in a very balanced and common-sense approach to mediation. Lisa Geraghty is a veterinary surgeon who worked as a veterinary practitioner in both farm and companion animal practice before taking up a position as a third level lecturer in veterinary nursing and bioveterinary science. While working as an educator she completed a Research Masters in Veterinary Microbiology and is the recipient of a first class honours Law Degree. She is published nationally  on the subject of employment law in veterinary practice. Her advice is simple "having the correct procedures in place in the workplace and using them well is key to preventing disputes".  From experience she knows that busy veterinary practice owners rarely have the time or expertise to put together the optimum employment law compliance package for their staff. As part of her law training she also discovered that the ability to resolve a dispute using alternative methods to the courts was, in fact, the ultimate skill. Her background in self-employment, combined with her experience in employment with the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and in an Institute of Technology has awarded her an excellent outlook on what parties in dispute need from their mediator – fairness, efficiency and honesty. In particular, her knowledge of the veterinary and agricultural industries as well as her experience with educational workplace relations makes her an ideal candidate to mediate within these areas.
